PACKAGE DESIGN
BRIEF
Silver Branch Brewing wanted to rebrand a line of space-themed West Coast IPAs and connect the products to their brand mascot— Hop-Man.
INTERVIEW
The company is an “explorer” brand, so the design and illustration needed to be evocative of an adventurous quest through space.
INSPIRATION
We were immediately inspired by mid-century sci-fi and fantasy comic worlds, or “retrofuturism.”
BRANDING
Once again inspired by comics, we took the convention of employing a primary and secondary font in the title. The colorways used different palettes for each product, but retained a consistent tone and vibrance to establish a visual cohesion.
CHARACTER SHEET
Since he is a recurring figure, I made a reference study for “retrofuturist Hop-Man” to help keep the illustrations consistent.
THUMBNAILS
Using this space, I drafted thumbnail sketches to pitch the overall concept and composition of the art.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I try to think beyond the label. Though the packaging is the primary application for the art, the graphic is used across channels and media to promote the brand line. It’s good to create art that easily fits into various formats— sell sheets, tap handles, posters, shirts, and coasters.
